adventure this town: south carolina state museum

I'll admit that I am a bit of a history nerd. I love to poke around museums, and I've been to many, including a few of the Smithsonians. We happen to have a lovely museum right in our backyard - Columbia is home to the South Carolina State Museum. The museum is housed in the former Columbia Mill building, a textile mill built in 1893. This mill was the first textile mill in the nation to be operated by electricity. Today, the building is home to many, many interesting exhibits, from natural history, science & technology, to South Carolina history.

Mom was in town this weekend, and we celebrated a belated Mother's Day on Sunday by visiting the South Carolina State Museum. It was the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon together. If you've not been, make sure you add the museum to your rainy day list - or any day list! It's definitely worth a visit!

For information on hours, admission and special exhibits, be sure to visit the South Carolina State Museum's official website.

foodie friday: bangkok

Dell and I finally made it back to our favorite Thai spot in Columbia since their reopening in a new location: Bangkok! Bangkok was one of the first Thai restaurants in Columbia, and their food is phenomenal. You can find Bangkok nestled among shops in the strip mall near the Garners Ferry Walmart, but don't let its location fool you. If you like Thai cuisine and you have not tried this place yet, you are missing out!

Our go-to dishes at Bangkok are the Shrimp Pad Thai (to DIE for) and the Massaman Curry with chicken. We were extra hungry this evening so we ordered Fried Wantons and Egg Rolls too!

frock & frill: epcot challenge attire

In honor of our upcoming trip to Disney World, this week's frock & frill post is a little throwback to the day Dell and I did the "Epcot Challenge" on a trip last year. For those unfamiliar, the challenge is when you have a drink in every country in the World Showcase. If you've never been to Epcot, I'll just put it this way - the World Showcase is made up of eleven countries. ELEVEN!

Since this is a frock & frill post, I'll spare you the pictures from later that day when things got silly. Don't worry, I'll be sharing a much more detailed post about the Epcot Challenge after our trip next weekend, silly pictures included!

daytrippin'

It's definitely wedding season! We went to another beautiful wedding last weekend.

These two melting my heart as usual.

Got the cutest dog donut for Brody in Asheville! Love spoiling that pup.

I can't believe we are already almost half way through May! This month is FLYING by! We've got little trips planned each weekend for the rest of this month, which feels like is consuming all of my time but I LOVE IT! I'll be heading back up into the mountains this weekend for my cousin's graduation from Virginia Tech, and then Memorial Day weekend we are joining our very best friends for a trip to Disney World!! I don't think May could get any better if it tried!

I've mentioned before that one of my favorite things about Columbia is its close proximity to so many travel destinations. That's why I am particularly loving this article from the Free Times about off-beat day trip destinations from Columbia. I'll definitely be adding some these to my summer bucket list!

frock & frill: dreamy sandals

Summer is fast approaching around here, and I am beginning to trade in my flats for sandals. When the temperature starts hitting 90+ degrees, it's time to free those toes! Here are a few sandals & polishes I am dreaming of this season:

foodie friday: the other store

My favorite type of lunch place is a delicious meal that comes from a place you would never expect. This week, I found just that from The Other Store, located down a back road off of Forest Drive. The Other Store is a a small convenient store with an even smaller deli in the back. They have PHENOMENAL sandwiches and the most charming little back deck. It almost makes you feel as if you're miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city, nestled away at an old country general store. I had the Grace's Avocadowich with a side of cucumber & onion salad. SO GOOD! I am highly recommending this place!
